LAMES

The reference laboratory for studying infrastructure durability: from design to asset management.

Mission

More durable and resilient infrastructures

LAMES conducts cutting-edge research on transport infrastructures, combining large-scale experimentation, advanced instrumentation and numerical modelling. The goal: improving the durability, performance and resilience of transport and civil engineering infrastructures.

Equipped with facilities unique in France — including the FABAC machines and the fatigue carousel — the laboratory can simulate years of traffic loading in just a few months, producing essential data for the design and maintenance of infrastructures.

01
Mechanics
Mechanical behaviour: modelling and experimentation
Experimental characterisation and modelling of material and structural behaviour under static, dynamic and repeated loading.
02
Monitoring
Multi-scale, multi-physics monitoring and decision support
Sensors, non-destructive methods and analysis tools for continuous monitoring and diagnosis of infrastructures at different scales.
03
Innovation
New functionalities and new uses of infrastructures
Integration of innovative materials and active systems to give infrastructures new capabilities: energy, environment, safety.
04
Digital
Digitalisation of infrastructures
Digital twins, infrastructure BIM and big data exploitation for intelligent and predictive asset management.

Location

Nantes Campus

Gustave Eiffel University — Allée des Ponts et Chaussées, Route de Bouaye, Bouguenais (44). The laboratory benefits from the scientific environment of the Nantes campus, which also hosts the GPEM, MIT and SMC laboratories.

IFSTTAR Heritage

A tradition of applied research

LAMES carries forward the expertise of the French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Spatial Planning and Networks (IFSTTAR), integrated into UGE in 2020. Its equipment is the result of more than 30 years of research.

Parent Department

LAMES within the MAST Department

The Materials and Structures (MAST) department of Gustave Eiffel University brings together seven complementary laboratories around durability, ecological transition and innovation for transport, energy and building infrastructures.

As a laboratory on the Nantes campus, LAMES contributes to MAST's missions on transport infrastructures, working closely with the MIT and GPEM laboratories.
